The tax burden the average American pays varies tremendously, and depends a lot on where you live, according to a study by financial social media company WalletHub. The study ranked all 50 states and the District of Columbia. An American making the median national income, driving an average car and living in the median-priced home could end up paying either 60 percent less, or almost 40 percent more, than the national average, based only on the state one calls home. The study's analysts created a profile of the "average American" based on median income ($65,596), median home price ($174,600) and other data, and then calculated how much the person would spend on taxes living in every state. It drew on data from several sources, including the Census Bureau, the Internal Revenue Service, the Tax Foundation, and even the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (for taxes paid on liquor). 1 Wyoming 2 Alaska 3 Nevada 4 Florida 5 South Dakota 6 Washington 7 Texas 8 Delaware 9 North Dakota 10 Colorado 11 New Mexico 12 Alabama 13 Arizona 14 Utah 15 Mississippi 16 Indiana 17 Louisiana 18 West Virginia 19 Montana 20 Oklahoma 21 Massachusetts 22 Rhode Island ****** 23 South Carolina 24 Georgia 25 Missouri 26 Tennesee 27 Virginia 28 New Hampshire 29 Hawaii 30 Arkansas 31 Kentucky 32 Ohio 33 Kansas 34 North Carolina 35 Idaho 36 Michigan 37 District of Columbia 38 Minnesota 39 Pennsylvania 40 Oregon 41 Maryland 42 Maine 43 Iowa 44 New Jersey 45 Vermont 46 Wisconsin 47 Illinois 48 Connecticut 49 Nebraska 50 California 51 New York Rank adjusted for Cost of Living Index: 1 Wyoming 2 Nevada 3 Florida 4 Alaska 5 South Dakota 6 Washington 7 Texas 8 New Mexico 9 Alabama 10 Mississippi 11 Utah 12 Delaware 13 North Dakota 14 Colorado 15 Indiana 16 Oklahoma 17 Arizona 18 Louisiana 19 West Virginia 20 Montana 21 Tennessee 22 Missouri 23 Kentucky 24 South Carolina 25 Georgia 26 Arkansas 27 Idaho 28 Ohio 29 Virginia 30 Kansas 31 Michigan 32 North Carolina 33 Iowa 34 Pennsylvania 35 Massachusetts 36 Minnesota 37 Nebraska 38 Illinois 39 Wisconsin 40 Rhode Island 41 New Hampshire 42 Oregon 43 Maine 44 Maryland 45 Vermont 46 District of Columbia 47 New Jersey 48 Hawaii 49 Connecticut 50 California 51 New York
